I have been working out most of my life. I started working out for sports while in junior high school and have continued on and off ever since. Being a typical macho man, I usually worked out for bulk and wanted to be the strongest guy in the gym. Unfortunately, this is probably not the healthiest way to look at things. Through the years I have gained size and strength, but my speed, endurance and flexibility have suffered. Also, because of this regimen, I have had a hard time keeping the weight off. For as long as I can remember I have settled in around 220 to 230 pounds with a few exceptions at either end of the spectrum (I got up to 285 my first year of college and down to 205 by the end of junior year). While this is heavy for my 5’10’’ frame, I always told myself that “muscle weighs more than fat and that I didn’t have that much body fat."

About 8 months ago I gave up the heavy weight workouts and joined boot camp. I did this mostly because I wanted a change of pace and for the challenge. The key word there is “challenge”. Val combines weight training, endurance, speed, and flexibility all into one workout. She is constantly using complementary exercises and drills for maximal gains. Since joining her boot camp, I have lost 25 pounds, have more endurance, and I’m more flexible. I am more cognoscente of what I put in my body as she is always having us “report” our weekly food intakes to her. Because of this new way of training, I have forgotten my old bulky routine and plan on continuing to lose another 15 pounds and focus on core strength and flexibility to better prepare me to live an injury free and healthy life.
